The legal minimum, and honestly the smart choice for older vans — comprehensive quotes on aged vehicles rarely justify the premium. We'll tell you when this is the better math.
What actually moves your van premium.
- Van age — once a van crosses roughly 10 years, most insurers only want to offer Third Party Only or TPFT; comprehensive becomes scarce and pricey.
- Your NCD — commercial NCD caps at 20% (not 50% like private cars), and it transfers between insurers. We verify it for you, no paperwork.
- Nature of business — what the van does all day matters to insurers; some trades simply price higher than others.
- Hire or reward use — carrying goods for others (couriers, logistics) costs more to insure than carrying your own, and the excess rises with it. Declare it correctly: undeclared use can void a claim.
- Attachments & modifications — canopies, boxes, tailgates and other add-ons raise the premium and must be declared.
- Who drives — drivers under 26, over 70, or licensed less than 2 years usually trigger an additional excess (YEID clause).
- Workshop plan — approved-workshop policies are cheaper than any-workshop, and for most working vans, entirely sufficient.
